still here

Sorry I haven't written anything or kept up with other people's blogs lately - I've never worked full time before! I'll probably get cranking again in the fall.

Anyway, speaking of work, I work in a very birdy place. Killdeer along the driveway, cowbirds on the windowsills, blue herons flying over the parking lot, goose jams on the highway leading to the building. Quite fun.

yesterday...

...all my troubles seemed so far away... (Sorry, couldn't resist!) Anyway, sorry for the lack of blogging and commenting lately but I spent the entire weekend at various graduation parties and yesterday I started my summer job, so I'm pretty exhausted.

I also got a wonderful piece of mail yesterday: my check and contributor's copy for my poem published in Aoife's Kiss! You know a magazine is smaaaaall when you get a check handwritten from the editor. Funnily enough, on the same day I got a rejection letter from a different publication for a short story I'd submitted a while ago.

Good night, all. I have to get up at six thirty tomorrow morning... again... ugh. Stupid job.

bird envy

Okay, Tufted Titmice are freaking loud. There was one in our front yard earlier, and even though we were in the kitchen, which is at the back of the house, we could here it clearly. "erp-PEEP-PEEP! erp-PEEP-PEEP! erp-PEEP-PEEP!" over and over again. Don't get me wrong, titmice are among my favorite birds (along with... almost every other species of bird?), but sometimes I'm amused by how loud and insistent their call is. Even my dad noticed and asked me what it was.

Then he told me about a friend of his who apparently had a Pileated Woodpecker nearly demolish a telephone pole in her yard. I'm jealous. I've never seen a Pileated Woodpecker.

Anyway, in case anyone's interested, the opening lines in my previous post come from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Beekeeper's Apprentice, Life of Pi, Catch 22, Great Expectations, and Babbitt.
